Vessels & water at the bottom of the well.
Conceived and titled in the spirit of reverence to Gieve Patel’s oeuvre, the portraits are painted as vessels to contain a drifting imagination of multiple gestures. The paintings intend to
engage the viewer to excavate and seek a portrait among several faces. They result from a gradual process of sedimenting the pigment and marble dust in strategic resorptions to
generate nuanced hues and texture.

The paintings intend to maintain the frugality of staining and attempt to propel a simple watercolour wash to an extent where it can become a portrait without a sitter.
I explore the processes of casting shadows of hands and head onto the canvas surface, in order to construct the painting of a face. The anonymity of these portraits and the silhouetted forms results from the sheer virtue of how watercolour behaves on the surface. The intimate, almost head-sized canvases, make it possible to tilt and construct the flow gradations and shapes that resonate with nuanced facial gestures. The colour is washed over and controlled to dry in strategic resorptions across the pristine white, extremely absorbent surfaces prepared with gesso and marble dust. Despite its unforgiving tendency, each wash of watercolour offers a possibility to be negotiated with, forgotten and often revived. The dichotomic quality of the medium makes it possible to paint a single portrait in a manner of excavating one face after another on the same painting.
