Born in the coastal town of Porbandar, Gujarat, Ravi was brought up in a family where image-making was a constant as the family owned a traditional photography studio and darkrooms - The camera, the studio apparatuses, photographs of wildlife, the metallic odour of film processing fluids and the saline sea breeze were a part of the environment. He got his initial training into  figure drawing, art history and textile dyeing while studying clothing design. In 2003 for his graduate collection ‘Innocence of the Hand’, he experimented with indigo dyeing and painting with wax to resist dye the textiles. His paintings on paper were first exhibited in 2009 by Anupa Mehta Contemporary Art at The Loft at Lower Parel, Mumbai. The solo show comprised twelve paintings with faces, some of the titles like - Man in a Movie Hall, Videotape Memories, & Death of a Bee - were gestural constructs as faces. Since then he has had four solo shows with Anupa Mehta Contemporary Art - Mumbai and has exhibited at Gallery OED - Cochin & Amdavad ni Gufa, Hurwitz Gallery - Ahmedabad.

Currently exploring the impermanent aspects of materials while painting, he is making images which are portraits in a rudimentary sense. They are an amalgamation of the landscapes and the tactile qualities of materials, textures and colours from the coastal belts and hilly terrains of Saurashtra in Gujarat. The paintings are made from materials such as calcium carbonate, chalks, marble dust and cements. These materials are also among the essential resources for which the terrains of this region have been consistently mined.
